AOL and NTL??

Aol and NTL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi I wonder if you can help me???....I have Aol gold through NTL...I want 2 pcs to share the connection but as u know AOL 'dont support'...so I spoke to NTL tech support and asked if I could remove my 3 way splitter and replace with a 4 way splitter run a cable (H109 of course )to my 2nd pc and add a modem(200 with AOL on it) and hey presto...they said yes if AOL say its ok..AOL said it was...NTL said I might need AOL to register the mac address of the new modem...AOL said to get a pin number from NTL.. NTL say they cant help...can you? my first modem, installed a year ago is fully working...the new modem which I have installed and done correctly with the exact same splitter cable and modem that NTL would use is powered up with the correct lights on and my pc tells me the connection is enabled, but the AOL software will not initialise my the modem..and when i put in the pin n and my surname (which are for the first modem) it just says my broadband is already activated, any ideas?? your help would be much appreciated as since both AOL and NTL said this was ok I am now told by each company to contact the other..I know a router would work but I need to get 2 AOL screen names on at once which is not possible with a router I dont think but anyway this was a temporary option for me as I may be moving house and will be forced to switch to BT as there is no NTL supply in North Wales
Hope you can help me
Best Regards
Neil

Hi and Welcome!

The advice you have been given, particularly from AOL, is incorrect. The part that "AOL said to get a pin number from NTL" is frankly ludicrous.

Looking at it from an ntl: perspective, if you want two connections in one house, you must have two seperate accounts, the setting up of these generates two PIN numbers/usernames and most importantly two bills. So that is a round about way of saying "you want 2 you pay for 2".

AOL uses the ntl: cable for access, and some of the infrastructure but all said and done, all provisioning, registration, authentication, billing, service provision, etc., is AOL's responsibility towards you, not ntl:s, (and AOL also employ the principle of "you want 2 you pay for 2").

Your relationship in terms of payment and getting the service is with AOL, not ntl: hence my "ludicrous" comment above.

I accept it is not intentional, but you are in effect asking "how do I get service on a second cable modem for free", and what you have seen from the ntl: perspective are the checks and balances that prevent that.

AOL need to help you here (if indeed there is a solution), pointing at ntl: is simply sloping shoulders.

As an aside I thought Netgear routers worked, but I'm not sure about the 2 Screen IDs at once.

Peter

Sicne post this I have been on the phone to AOL and NTL...NTL tech support told me it would work...AOL say it wont and gave valid reasons but did confirm that a router would work, even though they dont support it....NTL gave me false info and so did the india call centre (pakistani people who read scripts...this was also said by the level 2 tech suport I spoke to, and i'm not being racist and mean no offence)..to be fair I have never had any trouble but dont understand why the customer service within these 2 companys is noew utter cr*p when it used to be great..my advice for when you call AOL is to press option 3 to cancel account, that way u get to the irush call centre and they are great, understand english and will help you..but get to level 2 techies if you can...back to my problem and that basically I was given incorrect info....

Edit by Peter M text suggesting an illegal activity has been removed

any how they also mentioned that if I needed to keep my AOL email addresses and connect 2 pcs to one internet connection that I had 2 options
1. use a router and the level 2 tech confirmed it will work with NTL and will allow 2 screen names to sign on at one time providing the account is the gold package
2. Use 'bring your own access' and use an ISP that supports wireless networking
I take on board what u say with regard to the paying for 2 accounts and they did tell me today after 3 weeks of phone calls that this is the only way to connect with a second cable modem to activate it with surname and pin....better late than never....should have got a level 2 techie on the first call!!!

As I mentioned above, its clear that you have been given incorrect info, however I stand by the comment that AOL suggesting that its up to ntl: to sort you out when you are an AOL customer is particularly bad.

Fact is you should not have had to go to ntl: at all, as an AOL customer AOL should have sorted you out.

Mentioning a clearly illegal activity after my comment about "second cable modem for free", is getting close to the bone.

Pakistani's and Indians are different people by the way. Lets leave it at that?

As it seems you are sorted - thread closed.
