Email Migration problems
My ntlworld email was migrated overnight - and now I have problems
OK how it worked A 2 MacBooks - one of which is the work horse and in daily use [ other is back up ] and one iPodTouch [ in constant use ] B 2 email accounts - one on ntlworld.com and one on me.com [ Apple account ] Until today everything came in on both the Touch and MacBook . NOW - MacBook gets both me.com and ntlworld in without problems the Touch only gets me.com Soooooo went and started to look for the solution and I'm not sure that I've got it. According to Virgin if I put :recent in front of my full email address in the incoming settings on the account settings on the Touch this should work - BUT in neither my Touch or the MacBook does my incoming mail server actually have my full email address [ the Touch has the info as Name , address which is email address , description - POP account and then for the incoming Mail server it has Host Name [ the part before @ etc] and my password . I'm confused now - my system has worked perfectly for some time without the full e-mail address being used on the incoming mail server settings . If I just insert the :recent in front of my host name bit in the Touch , and in the same place on the Account settings on the MB without the rest of the e-mail address being used - will this fix it ? I'm off on holiday soon [ very soon] and would appreciate getting this sorted before I go - I don't really like using Webmail and IMAP has given me nasty problems in the past so I'm not going there again.

Having all sorts of problems here since migration .... emails I send going to Spam... not sending .... missing incoming mails .... pop3 not working and when it does its very flakey been trying to get it to work for 2 days now ...... The instruction on the VM website for the Mac don't work correctly.... they tell you to use password details etc for SMTP ... in my case I cant send emails if I do this but if I leave it set to none it works.... IMAP seems to be the best option at the moment though.... If I get it sorted out will let you know.... Rick |

beware of IMAP. I tried that last year with my new MacBook Pro all seemed to be OK but suddenly I got a message up telling me my new HardDrive was almost full !! The MBP was about 1 month old then . Talk about a panic - I couldn't find what was wrong - went into Apple and eventually the Genius discovered that somehow we had a loop going on - emails were continuously downloading and replicating themselves !! We had to disable IMAP to get them off , cleared/cleaned up the MBP and set up IMAP again - same result I now refuse to even contemplate IMAP Me.com is still working with my MBP and of course on the Touch . I'm bemused why they keep saying that the incoming username is the full e-mail address - mine isn't - it's just the bit before the @ntlworld.com. I was looking forward to just taking the Touch away with me for holiday e-mail use - but it's no go now unless I start to use me.com full time , and I find the 2 addresses useful.

Even odder things are happening.
I can send using ntlworld from my Touch Overnight an email came into my Touch [ using the ntlworld addy ] from the USA - and I read it then . Seems that the delivery of our sent e-mails is very erratic . There seems to have been several hours delay between sending that one and it actually being delivered in the USA . However this morning when I woke the MBP that e-mail didn't pop into my mail box - but about 20 mins later I did get another from a UK sender. I've just checked on the Webmail version of our improved e-mail system and the incoming one , which was about 2.00 am doesn't feature there but the one that came in from the UK at 7.00 is there. This new "improved" system is a real mess . Why on earth did Virgin decide to mess about with it ? After all , if a thing ain't ....................

Even more oddities
Decided to have a look at my 'sent' box on the Webmail - it contains only 2 emails - and I do at least know that one was delivered as it also has the answer attached to it . The other one I think has been delivered . But the really interesting thing is that both these 'sent ' messages were from my Touch using the ntlworld address.

Imap is working for me as it should be. No odd behaviour at all. The only issue is with the SMTP settings as I posted before. It will not accept user name and password as the instructions said.

Well - it's all still very odd for me
Virgin's own help and support Forum is not much help either . I can now receive ntlworld e-mails in on my iPodTouch overnight when the MBP is in sleep mode . HOWEVER these do not download to the MBP when it is woken . During the day everything comes in to the MBP. Yesterday I accidentally deleted the ntl account from the iPod Touch - took a lot of fiddling to get it back and finally [ I think ] got it to send emails from ntlworld this morning . I dread to think what will happen when they decide to give us all Virginmedia email addresses .

I now have everything working as it used to do
Sending was a bit sticky the first time I tried from the Touch - but now all is well . I'm still worried about how any problems will be dealt with should they switch us to Virginmedia e-mail addresses .

I'm dreading it when we lose our ntl addresses - that is likely to be a nightmare change again.
